With roots that trace back to Richmond, VA, Tennessee-based singer-songwriter, Gretchen, has been captivating listeners with her innovative brand of R&B with Hip-Hop undertones. She’s versatile, and her music has this sensibility that makes her songs extremely relatable. Although she began her musical journey in 2015 at Belmont University (Nashville, TN), her talent suggests that she’s had an interest in music her whole life. Now, she deputs on our pages with her introspective new single “Paper Bird”.
“Paper Bird” is raw, and in your face. Gretchen holds nothing back. With her punchy delivery and lyrical imagery, she enters the song with a swag that would have hip-hop counterparts questioning their own abilities. To add to her exceptional bars, she delivers a smooth R&B hook that adds a refreshing touch to the record. “Paper Bird” is a straightforward yet laid-back take on a relationship gone sour, whether it be a friend, family member, lover - all apply. With production from Josh Ashley, the song follows the stages of ridding oneself from the relationship and ultimately urges listeners to be wary of the company they keep, as that company heavily contributes to how oneself views themselves and the world around them. The record is one of my favorite releases of the week, and Gretchen has made me a fan. She is an artist’s artist. So, if you're looking for new music, stream this single below.
