Emerging Australian singer-songwriter Woodes has taken the industry by storm. Known for her cinematic approach to pop music, she has made a name for herself by crafting infectious songs that pull at listener’s heartstrings. Her sound is expansive, and I love the nostalgic feel to her records. I have been searching for an artist like Woodes for a while. For me, she is a beautiful mixture of Santigold, Lana Del Rey, & Halsey. Now, she enters our pages with her stunning 4-track EP “Hibernation”.

“Hibernation” takes listeners on a sonic journey of exploration. Woodes plunges into the darker side of her creative persona while inviting us back into her cinematic world. Cohesive at its core, the EP feels like it could have been the soundtrack to a blockbuster film. It’s daring, captivating, and it is one of the most complete projects I have heard this year. I found myself wanting more after my first listen. Her singing is exceptional, and I loved her sonic arrangement. Each song builds on the next, and we get to see her complete thoughts expanded upon with her unique songwriting. In contrast to her previous EP “Kingdom Come”, we see Woodes fully embrace her artistry. The project feels like her coming out party, and it shows that she has the “IT” factor.

My favorite songs from the project were “Hibernate” & “Don’t Look Back”. “Hibernate” was a reflective single that discusses the hardship of lockdown while also diving into the idea of overcoming it and waking up from the situation. To me, this song was about shedding the past version of yourself and coming out better and more awake than ever. “Don’t Look Back” is an innovative record laced with engaging sonics, lush melodies, and a “heady” build up. The record is commanding and shows her skill as a vocalist and songwriter. Overall, this is one of my favorite projects of the year. So, stream it below!
