When it comes to music discovery, I am always search for artists that push the boundaries and bring you into their world. In a time where most modern music feels formulaic, I yearn for the artists that are making music that I consider healing. There is nothing like listening to a song or album that you connect with. For me, listening to music that gives me goosebumps is a high that I chase every time I play a new artist. Although the industry is saturated with artists and music emerging daily, I still find a way to come across hidden gems that are moving music forward. This week, I came across rising rapper Teddy Mac.
Hailing from Chicago, Teddy Mac has taken the music industry by storm with his exceptional delivery and songwriting prowess. He is a force to reckoned with. Personally, he’s one of the only rappers that has moved me as of late. Although I’m still new to his overall sound, he enters our pages with his gritty new album, “Job Not Finished”.
Donning a name that is similar to the Kobe Bryant quote, “Job Not Finished” is a bar-heavy lyric focused rap album that I consider to be timeless. The album is raw, daring, and it packs a punch. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Lupe Fiasco, J. Cole, Kanye West, & Drake, Teddy Mac pens an album that is a calling to action for all of us to confront complex societal issues. He challenges the issues we face with his reflective album, and the project succeeds in calling out the broken system. For me, I loved that there are songs for everyone on the album. He has his hard-hitting songs, and he also has more emotional and introspective records meant to pull at your heartstrings. Although he does discuss social commentary on the album, the 14-track masterpiece also discusses themes of love, loyalty, and family.
My favorite songs on the album were “Pressure” & “Division”. “Pressure” is a gritty record with hard-hitting percussive elements. You can feel his energy and anger in each bar. This was a staple on the album. From start to finish, this song evoked raw emotions out of me, and it made me want to run through a wall. “Division” is the perfect song for our political and social state as a country and a world. Everyone is at each other’s neck, and we all seem to be isolating and tearing others apart due to opposing beliefs. This is a reflective song that paints a picture of these very issues.
Overall, this was an incredible album, and Teddy Mac is on his way to hip-hop gold. He has a timeless album in his hands, and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to catch up.
