In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Sukh.
Sukh is an innovative singer-songwriter that is pioneering this new generation of artists. His songs are captivating, daring, and raw. To add to his impressive resume, he is the only doctor/music artist that we have ever covered. Sukh uses these experiences in the medical field to craft a pop-rock sound that is both introspective and uplifting. Now, he enters our pages with his latest album, “Heading East”.
“Heading East” is a 10-track masterpiece that I consider to be Sukh’s magnum opus. For me, it’s his best project to date. Although I loved his 2022 effort, “Age of Stranger”, “Heading East” shows his growth as a songwriter and vocalist. Sukh dives into themes of self-reflection, long-term relationships, love, and the navigation of life’s ups & downs. Sukh set out to describe the stage of the relationship after the honeymoon. Most artists focus on new love due to how adventurous and amazing it can be. However, Sukh discusses what happens after that initial thrill of novelty. As someone who recently lost my girlfriend of 9-years, I felt so connected to this album. The songs are complex, and Sukh connected with producer Rex Capriotti from the band “Shape of Water” to execute on this timeless album. I wish I had an album like this back in the early days of my relationship that discussed the work that actually goes into a relationship after the honeymoon phase. Although I think I did a good job at figuring it out, it would have been nice to have an artist with a project out like this. “Heading East” is a record that has 2 distinct versions. The original version was recorded many years ago but never released by Sukh. Instead, Sukh decided to return to the songs, rework them and reimagine them. Both versions are intended to be released over the coming months.
My favorite songs were “Love Atom” & “Kind”. I loved the sonic progression and build up on “Love Atom”. There is this freeing feeling I get when I listen to it. Sukh’s warm vocals provided a comfort that allowed the lyrics to strike a chord. This song means everything to me. The chorus is otherworldly. “Kind” is captivating single laced with lush melodies, electric pianos, and engaging guitar riffs. This is the kind of record that you ride with the windows to. It brings back the nostalgia of past summers I had with my girlfriend. This song gives me hope for the future. Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of the year. Stream it below and vibe out!
