Music discovery has been and will continue to be about finding the artists that are set to change the entire industry. In a time where music feels formulaic and emotionless, I continue to search for artists that are pioneering this next generation. Regardless of monthly listeners and hype, all I care about is the music. What story are you trying to tell? What sets you apart from the rest of the industry? Do I can connect with this? These are all questions that I try to answer when finding new artists. This week, I came across an artist that has caught my attention. That artist is Lí-Lí Octave.
Lí-Lí Octave is a Caribbean Soul Queen that has captivated audiences with her ability to craft records with rich and soulful sounds. Her songs are dynamic, and they have a classy touch that keeps you coming back for more. Personally, I consider her to be one of the most refreshing artists out right now. She makes the music she likes, and she doesn’t give in to industry standards. Now, she debuts on our pages with her latest album, “Play on Venus (Live at Jazz’n Dine 2024).
The live album is absolutely mesmerizing. From her vocal tones to the instrumentation, the songs are exceptional. For those that are new to live albums, I would say these truly weed out the true artists. The ability to perform these records knowing there isn’t a lot of mixing and mastering taking place is what I respect about them. You can hear the emotion and raw vocals of an artist which allows true music lovers like me to connect more. This is what the artist had to say about the album:
“‘Play on Venus’ is my take on the female perspective and what we as women experience in everyday situations. You know the famous saying that men are from Mars and women are from Venus? Well, this is my way of inviting everyone to take on the soulful journey of the making of this lyrical Venus of mine — a planet of worded expressions which has formed this Play on Venus album.”
On the album she dives into themes of love making, the compromising situations that we sometimes find ourselves in, & the struggle we experience trying to control our thoughts and words. The introspective themes provide a lot of inner self-reflection, and that is what makes this album so relatable. The singer bears it all, and her songwriting is captivating. I consider this album a work of art, and it is a career defining effort from the singer-songwriter.
My favorite songs were “Out of Place”, “Wait (For Your Love)”, & “Grandma’s Kitchen”. I found myself relating to those the most, and I would recommend those to any new listeners. Overall, this live album was a knockout, and she has made a fan out of me. Stream the album below and hear what we are all raving about!
