In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. After entering our pages with his debut EP “bloom later”, Alistair Futura releases his captivating follow up “sometimes boy cry”.
“sometimes boy cry” is his second EP, and it is groundbreaking, The EP feels like an extension of his debut project, but the songwriting and sonics seem more fine-tuned. His delivery is exceptional, and the production is dynamic and expansive. Alistair has this innate ability to invite you into his world with his genre-bending sound. His vocal tones and effects add the perfect cherry on top to his moody & cinematic DIY production.
From a songwriting standpoint, this EP is more mature than his prior. It is reflective, but he also seems more self-aware. Although he’s a teenager, he is wise beyond his years, and he has experienced things that he’s able to express within his art. That shows growth. He’s facing his issues, and he’s finding out that it is okay to be vulnerable. As someone who just lost their girlfriend, this EP means a lot to me, because it is okay for boys to cry.
My favorite songs from the EP were “PEACHES & CREAM” & “SELF LOVE”. Overall, this is another great project from the rising star. If you’re not a fan, then you need to fix that now. Alistair Futura is the next big thing.
