When it comes to music discovery, I am always searching for artists that push the boundaries and bring you into their world. In a time where most modern music feels formulaic, I yearn for the artists that are making music that I consider healing. There is nothing like listening to a song or album that you connect with. For me, listening to music that gives me goosebumps is a high that I chase every time I play a new artist. Although the industry is saturated with artists and music emerging daily, I still find a way to come across hidden gems that are moving music forward. This week, I came across rising singer-songwriter Shawn Seguin.
Shawn is a versatile artist that has captivated the hearts of all that listen to him. With a history of being in hip-hop, the multi-instrumentalist has a genre-bending sound that will have you hooked. His songs are fun, dynamic, and they evoke raw emotions out of those that listen. For me, I truly love the way he challenges himself to make different genres of music while maintaining his identity. Now, he debuts on our pages with his album, “Saving Christmas”.
“Saving Christmas” is a dynamic album carried by rich sounds and engaging melodies. Over the 9-tracks, Shawn excels in taking listeners on a sonic journey through various genre-bending songs that will have you reflecting and wanting to dance simultaneously. I was a huge fan of the songwriting. It was playful and informative. His ability to use Christmas and discuss politics and other themes made this album so unique. My favorite lyric had to be, “Christmas is ruined, no matter who the president is”. At a time where everyone is on edge for the upcoming election, I found it humorous that he reiterated that Christmas is ruined regardless of who is elected. In my opinion, it contributes to the idea that even the highest power officials in America can’t save Christmas. In addition, I loved the humor of the album. In “Me and Mariah”, I found it hilarious when he said, “we will be, the king & queen of Christmas”. Everyone knows Mariah Carey is unmatched due to her 4th studio album, “Merry Christmas”. Shawn Seguin has now entered the chat with his humorous album that brings the fun back to the holiday.
Overall, this album is a masterpiece, and I would consider it to be his magnum opus. His energy is unmatched, and this music felt fun. I don’t remember the last time I truly enjoyed an album until I heard this. The songs that left a lasting impression on me were “Christmas is Ruined”, “Me and Mariah”, & “I Love Home Alone”. “Christmas Spirit” also stood out. The song is an indie-pop track that’s more serious than the rest. It’s a song about togetherness. Shawn sings, “it’s the love we shared, this time of year”. I really loved those lyrics. As someone who is losing his girlfriend of 9 years, this lyric made me reminisce all the good times I had with her. I want to personally thank Shawn for making an album that touched me in that way. The album officially releases November 1st, so it will be right on time for the holiday season. You can pre-save it below!
