In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it on oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Deem Marley.

Hailing from Hempstead, NY, Deem Marley has emerged as one of the most captivating artists this year. He is raw, daring, and his flows are engaging. After initially catching my attention with his 2016 EP “GamePlay”, I knew the kid was a burgeoning star. His versatility and ability to express himself on genre-bending production makes him so unique. Now, he enters our pages with his EP, “Marley Maverick”.

“Marley Maverick” is a 6-track masterpiece, and I would consider it to be his magnum opus. His vocal tones, cadences, and beat selection were a chef’s kiss. His ability to find his pocket on hip-hop & r&b sounding production while also sticking to the overall theme can’t be overlooked. Although this is his first EP released on major streaming platforms, I can see his growth and maturity as an artist. In 2016, he had all the tools to be great. He has finally polished those skills, and this EP is the proof.

My favorite songs were “Like Mike” & “My Boo P2”. “Like Mike” starts with him saying, “It’s been a long road, I can write a bible.” To a start a song off like that made him stand out off the jump. I loved his vocal cadence, and his tone was perfect for the production. Sonically, this was the best song on the album. “My Boo P2” has the best groove. I loved the pace and overall bounce of the production. Deem went absolutely crazy on this beat. If any song made me a fan, it had to be this one. This was a track laced with flair, energy, and his bravado could be felt. Overall, this is one of my favorite projects this year so stream it below!
