Although we’re still in the early stages of 2021, I think it’s okay to crown Caleb Cruise’s new album ‘Play Me Never’ as my favorite project of the year. The Oklahoma City native finds a sweet spot in making innovative songs that blend hip-hop and elements of pop. The project is a great introduction to the rapper, and it showcases his versatility as an artist overall. ‘Play Me Never’ has songs that will make you want to rage with your best friends, and it also has songs that will pull at your heartstrings.

On the first listen, I was blown away by his ability to craft songs that all brought a different feel. You can tell that he was heavily inspired by elements of hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. My favorite songs from the project were ‘Blessed’, ‘LA’, and ‘Back Home’.

‘Blessed’ is a smooth single that has an infectious hook that will keep you singing from start to finish. My favorite elements of the song are the use of 80’s synths and the smooth EQ he has on his vocals. This record is a true standout, and it is a summer-ready jam.

‘Back Home’ is a straight banger, and it features Caleb’s natural cadence that we’ve seen on past songs. In addition, to being catchy, the beat switch at the end is a perfect ending for such a smooth record. For anyone looking for his signature sound, this is the song for you.

‘LA’ is by far my favorite song on the project. It’s about breaking bad habits and finally moving away from toxic places and relationships. Although it’s upbeat, this is one of the most relatable songs on the album. The production is intoxicating, and his lyricism is top-tier. Overall, the album is a great debut for the artist, and I cant wait to see the future for the emerging star. If you are looking for some new music, go check this out ASAP!

Favorite Song: LA

Lyrics That Stick:

”I can’t get away, get away from this mess I’m in

In LA, in LA I’m outside but

I just wanna break, wanna break from this regimen

MIA, MIA, I know I’m outta time”
