When it comes to music discovery, I always find myself searching for artists that are willing to bring listeners into their world. I yearn for artists that are looking to push the boundaries lyrically & sonically. Because of that, I find myself searching for disruptors that refuse to align with the genre norms. Although it’s often hard finding these artists, it feels like I hit the lottery when I do. This week, I came across the captivating duo Mykii J and The Kelly.

Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, Michael B. Carroll Jr., has been making a name for himself under the alias Mykii J. He is raw, daring, and captivating. The burgeoning star is a singer-songwriter, rapper, poet, and executive producer that has continued to push the boundaries within the music industry. In a time where most music feels formulaic, he continues to rise to the occasion. Linking up with Mimi A.K.A The Kelly, the talented duo has impressed with their ability to craft records that evoke raw emotions. With them both being from Philly, the chemistry is there, and that is what makes their music so good. Now, they enter our pages with their latest album, “Music 4 Mutants, Vol. 2: MUTANT DYNASTY”.

“Music 4 Mutants, Vol. 2: MUTANT DYNASTY” is a 19-track masterpiece that highlights the duo’s songwriting and exceptional production. It is carried by dynamic production, explosive bars, lush melodies, and catchy songwriting that will have you coming back for more. The album is a chef’s kiss. This is what they had to say about the album:

BOTD: What was the inspiration behind the album?

Mykii J: "This album is a continuation of my debut solo project, 'Music 4 Mutants, Vol. 1.' As a gay Black man, I deeply understand what it feels like to be treated differently from those deemed more 'acceptable' by society. I aimed to create a world where our differences are celebrated and recognized as superpowers. In this universe, the outcasts hold the power; hence the term 'Mutants,' which I proudly identify with alongside my fans.

Being a mutant is about embracing your true self. It's about self-love in a world that often tells us we aren't good enough because we are different. At Mutant Headquarters, the so-called 'social lepers' are actually gifted super-beings. This album is a call to embrace your uniqueness and to find strength in what makes you, you."

BOTD: What do you want listeners to take from the project?

Mykii J: "We want listeners to walk away feeling empowered and inspired to embrace their true selves. This project is all about celebrating individuality and recognizing that our differences can be our greatest strengths. We hope people feel a sense of belonging at 'Mutant Headquarters,' where everyone is valued for who they are. Ultimately, we want listeners to understand that self-love is essential, especially in a world that often tries to diminish us. By embracing our uniqueness, we can transform our perceived vulnerabilities into superpowers."

BOTD: What is your favorite track?

Mykii J: "My favorite track on the album is 'Heartbreak Connoisseur.' I actually wrote it a few years ago with the intention of keeping it hidden. At that time, it was just a rough draft—a shell of the song. Earlier this year, I began reflecting on my experiences with heartbreak and disappointment, which inspired me to revisit it. I rewrote several sections and brought in a live trumpet player and a female gospel soloist to enhance the emotional depth.

After leaving the studio, I realized that shelving this song would have been one of the worst mistakes I could have made. It's relatable, heartfelt, and thought-provoking. I can honestly say that it's not only my favorite song on the album, but also one of my favorite songs I have ever created."

The Kelly: "My favorite track on the album is 'Repertoire.' This song emerged from one of the most tumultuous relationships I’ve experienced, and I felt that writing and recording it would be a therapeutic process—and it truly was. I wanted to create a female empowerment anthem that would stand out and resonate with others. It was important for me to be the voice for women who have gone through similar experiences. The emotional journey of creating this song helped me heal and allowed me to close that chapter of my life. I emerged from that experience stronger, rising like the Grand Phoenix that I am."

BOTD: What all went into making the project?

Mykii J: "Oh my gosh, it involved many sleepless nights and stressful days! Both The Kelly and I were juggling so many responsibilities while writing and recording this album. The process spanned over two and a half years, during which I was attending nursing school and my sister, The Kelly, was pursuing a dual degree in Special Education. What started as a fun idea quickly became quite challenging, especially as independent artists.

We had to write all the songs ourselves and manage both pre- and post-production for every track and music video. My sister crafted the treatments for our videos and directed them, we both handled styling and wardrobe, and took charge of marketing and promotion. We also contributed to the graphic design ideas, and I co-produced many of the songs.

It was an intense journey, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Despite the challenges, we created a body of work that we are incredibly proud of, and our listeners seem to love it too. We are thrilled with how the album turned out and excited to see the impact it continues to have."

My favorite tracks from the album were “Trouble”, “The Come Up”, & “Can’t Stop Me”. “Trouble” is a vibrant record that showcases an innovative take on a classic pop tune. I loved the drill elements used and the sharp rap cadences mixed with the duo’s songwriting prowess made this a hit. This is the record that will have you coming back for more. “The Come Up” shows the cohesiveness and chemistry between the two veterans. Mykii impresses with his in-your-face bars while The Kelly hops in with her breathy flows and bravado. The amount of swagger they bring to each song is unmatched. “Can’t Stop Me” is a more reflective song but it deserves a listen. Overall, this album is a must hear. With that being said, stream it below and vibe out!
