Captivating, sensational, and mesmerizing are all words that describe emerging singer-songwriter Morgan Swihart. For those that are still unaware of the burgeoning, Morgan is the definition of a true artist. She is raw, personable, and her songs evoke raw emotions out og her listeners. She is what I would call your favorite artist’s favorite artist. Drawing inspiration and influence from the New York cultural scene, Swihart’s sound is a mixture of folk, ambient, alt-rock, electronic, and more. This blend of sounds makes her refreshing and one of the most versatile artists that I have come across. The way she embodies her surroundings within her art is a gift. After initially impressing me with her debut album “The Grave”, she has continued to release captivating alt-rock hits that have had me hooked. Now, she enters our pages with her latest album, “Broken Ceilings”.
“Broken Ceilings” is an 8-track masterpiece, and I consider it to be Swihart’s magnum opus. The vulnerability and sonics on the album are exceptional. With the help of Pat Gerasia (drummer), Mark Solomich (bassist), Albert Difiore (mixing engineer/co-producer) and Grammy-Award winning mastering engineer Justin Shturtz, they deliver one of the best overall sounding projects of 2024. Each of them play a part in creating the canvas that allows Swihart’s colorful lyricism and vocal range to paint a beautiful picture to the listener. Over the 8 well-crafted tracks, Morgan discusses themes of revolving around mental health issues, while utilizing different styles of instrumentation to elevate the story behind them. The album is intimate and relatable.
My favorite songs from the album were “Ghost” & “Sharp Objects”. “Ghost” is an awakening record with a moody undertone. Laced with haunting vocals, Swihart floats over the sonics in an almost dreamy of hypnotizing way. From start to finish, I felt like I was in a daydream that I didn’t want to end. Her vocals had me in a trance. My personal favorite was “Sharp Objects”. “Sharp Objects” is an alt-rock masterpiece that shows her star power. The vocal range and lyricism were exceptional, and I loved the hook. Overall, this project as a whole is groundbreaking. Morgan Swihart is a star, and she deserves her flowers. Stream her album below!
