In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Maysun.
Hailing from Atlanta, the burgeoning star is the breath of fresh air the industry needs. She’s unlike anything I have heard as of recent. With her captivating vocals and keen ear for production, her songs evoke raw emotions out of her listeners. Incorporating moody guitar riffs, retro keys, thundering beats, and dramatic string arrangements has made her songs a force to be reckoned with. The rising singer is raw, inviting, and daring. Now, she debuts on our pages with her latest EP, “SOME LIKE IT HOT”.
“SOME LIKE IT HOT” is everything that is missing from modern day pop. From the first record to the last, I haven’t felt this alive from a project in months. Although Atlanta is known for Hip-Hop, Maysun is reminding us that they have some exceptional pop singers down south as well!
Over the 8-tracks, Maysun dives into themes of love, heartbreak, and acceptance. She pens songs that discuss the hardships that come from being in a tumultuous relationship where one party is giving more than the other. This is a feeling most of us can say we have experienced. No matter the disrespect or knowledge of their inconsistencies, we still stay in hope things change. I loved how she was able to display these feelings while also showing listeners her need to escape. This is a project I needed in a previous relationship.
Not to jump the gun, but Atlanta may have its own Amy Winehouse-esque artist. When I say this, it doesn’t mean I’m comparing their vocal or production talent. However, from a songwriting standpoint, both artists have this realness that can’t be overlooked. There is something about Maysun’s songwriting that makes me feel seen & heard. In a day & age where most music feels formulaic, the rising star continues to push “REAL” music. She brings a sound that can be felt!
My favorite tracks from the EP were “Summer Bummer” & “Friends With Benefits”. Overall, this is a must-listen project. Maysun has that “IT” factor, and she deserves to be heard. Stream her EP below and vibe out!
