In today’s music industry, I feel like everything sounds the same. Everyone is either riding the same trends or they are creating songs with little substance. As an art form, music needs to be expressive, and there needs to be an identity behind the artists/bands that are making it. In a time where music feels formulaic and emotionless, I continue to search for artists/bands that are pioneering this next generation. Regardless of monthly listeners and hype, all I care about is the music. What story are you trying to tell? What sets you apart from the rest of the industry? Do I can connect with this? These are all questions that I try to answer when finding new artists/bands. This week, I came across an artist named Maymung.
Hailing from California, Maymung is an alternative-pop artist that has taken the music industry by storm. He is raw, daring, and he has crafted a sound that is both captivating & intoxicating. With over a decade of experience, he has proven that he has the chops to make hits. His sound is dynamic, and his records are full of energy. Now, he enters our pages with his debut album, “Maymung Sucks”.
“Maymung Sucks” is a 12-track masterpiece full of dynamic sounds and rich sonics. In my opinion, I would consider it to be his magnum opus. It is rare for me to find an artist that has found their sound, but Maymung has definitely solidified his. This is what he had to say about the album:
BOTD: What went into creating the album?
Maymung: “I started this album back in January 2022. I wrote, recorded, produced, performed, mixed, and mastered every single song on the album. The whole record was inspired by my frustrations with having to work two jobs and still ending up broke at the end of the week. The story of the album sees me having to navigate those frustrations and look inward to solve my external and buried internal problems.”
BOTD: Were there any artists/bands that inspired you sonically?
Maymung: “The entire album is pure inspiration. It follows my love of music and genre throughout my life. It starts very alternative rock and pop punk, and slowly morphs from rock, to electronic and dance, to post punk, to pop, and all the way to experimental music. Notable bands and artist that inspired me the most through this work were Underscores, Porter Robinson, Fall Out Boy, Madeon, and Radiohead just to name a few.”
BOTD: Most impactful song from the album?
Maymung: “Most impactful song to me would probably be the final song. “March 32nd, 2095” is the only song on the album that isn't directly tied to me or my story. It follows a (hopefully) fictional character set in the future. A builder or artist, who aspired to great things in their life but never achieved much. This person is in their final days and lives alone and bitter. They finally face death and come to realize that the time they spent creating wasn't a waste of time at all. They have this second wind before the pass and it's so beautiful and impactful. Right when you think this character finally rests in peace, the scariest questions are finally asked. Is this all there is, Is there life after death, what awaits a sinful man?”
In my opinion, this is one of the best all around albums of the year sonically. His songwriting is exceptional, and I loved the layers of his production. Like I said before, I’m usually never impressed on the first listen of an album, but Maymung has exceeded my expectations. My favorite songs are “falling hard”, “Daydream”, & “WAKE UP”.
