Have you ever listened to an artist that gave you goosebumps on the first listen? If so, these kinds of artists are hard to come by. Their attention to detail and ability to convey raw emotions makes them incomparable to their industry counterparts. They resemble the true meaning of the word “artist”.
Recently, I cam across a musician that has these qualities, and his name is Matt Glickman. Matt Glickman is an emerging keyboardist, singer, and songwriter from the New England area. Coming from humble beginnings, the burgeoning star has cemented himself within the industry. Taking the musical and art influences from his time growing up in New York, he has become a vessel for art purists. His sound is expansive, and he has a way of crafting innovative records that pull at listener’s heartstrings. Now, he enters our pages with his highly anticipated album “Live from Starks, Maine 10.1.22”.
“Live from Starks, Maine 10.1.22” is a daring album that discusses themes of mental health, personal loss, and self-reflection. "The impact of COVID on music and my grief led me to break down a bit and has shaped a lot of the writing leading up to this show and its release," says Glickman, who tragically lost his mother in 2020.
For me, this album is therapy. Although I’m new to his sound, I felt like I really connected with Matt Glickman personally. I could feel his pain, struggles, and raw emotions laced within each record. I found myself developing a bond with someone I had never met. I lost a relative in 2020, and this album brought back all of those feelings.
The album is a sonic journey about growth and personal triumph. It festures the gorgeous vocals of Darby Sabin, known for her collaborations with Oteil Burbridge and Tom Constanten of the Grateful Dead. Alongside Darby, Matt recently shared the stage with Andy Frasco and the U.N., Karina Rykman, and more. They opened for the Emmy Award-winning Maggie Rose, celebrated for her appearances on the nationally syndicated Bobby Bones Show and acclaim from outlets like Vogue, The New York Times, and NPR. Additionally, in the previous year, Matt had the honor of opening for the Grammy-winning artist, Kabaka Pyramid.
Overall, the album is one of the best projects I have heard this year. The standout for me was Glickman’s 20-minute solo-acoustic rendition of Phil Lesh's "Unbroken Chain”. I have yet to hear anything as mesmerizing as this rendition. It was beautiful. Another song I thoroughly enjoyed was “Secrets Of The Stages”. It’s going to be hard to find an album that tops this album. It is cohesive and laced with engaging instrumentation that will have you hooked from start to finish. The album is set to release Friday November 10th so make sure to add it to your playlists!
