When it comes to music discovery, I always find myself searching for artists that are willing to bring listeners into their world. I yearn for artists that are looking to push the boundaries lyrically & sonically. Because of that, I find myself searching for disruptors that refuse to align with the genre norms. Although it’s often hard finding these artists, it feels like I hit the lottery when I do. This week, I came across a diamond in the rough called Matt Moody.

Hailing from Cleveland, OH, Moody is an exceptional artist known for his captivating sound. He is daring, raw, and he evokes raw emotions out of his listeners. For me, his music offers a refreshing feel to an oversaturated music industry, He is a breath of fresh air, and he continues to push himself as an artist. Now, he enters our pages with his joint EP “Gripping at the Wheel” with LA-based production duo Seacoast.

“Gripping at the Wheel” is an exceptional body of work that is carried by rich sounds and intoxicating vocals. Sonically, the project draws from elements of rock, soul, pop, & hip-hop & meshes them into one captivating sound. Seacoast’s production creates a beautiful canvas for Moody’s vocals to shine. The chemistry between them can be heard from start to finish.

My favorite songs were “Baphomets” & “Mustangs”. “Baphomets” was laced with a dream-pop soundscape & a groovy bassline. Moody’s gritty vocals shine on this record. In addition, I was a huge fan of the vocal tones and lush melodies. This was one of the most complete songs on the EP, and the chorus is otherworldly. “Mustangs” percussive groove and ethereal sonics will pull you in right away. This song was my personal favorite. The guitars are engaging, and the nostalgic feel of the record is memorable. Although it has a more melodic vibe, I was a fan of the hip-hop undertones! Overall, this project is nothing to look over. From start to finish, you will be hooked. So, stream the EP below and vibe out!
