Music discovery has been and will continue to be about finding the artists that are set to change the entire industry. In a time where music feels formulaic and emotionless, I continue to search for artists that are pioneering this next generation. Regardless of monthly listeners and hype, all I care about is the music. What story are you trying to tell? What sets you apart from the rest of the industry? Do I can connect with this? These are all questions that I try to answer when finding new artists. This week, I came across an artist that has caught my attention. That artist is Gitkin.

Hailing from New Orleans, LA, Brian J (aka Gitkin), has been a staple within the music industry. For starters, he’s a Grammy-nominated artist & producer that is known for working with the likes of Cedric Burnside, Bernard Purdie, & Cyril Neville. Vocally, he is exceptional, and his sonics are captivating. His sound is expansive, and it draws influence from the sounds of Cumbia, North African, and Middle Eastern music while also adding his personal touch. Personally, I find him to be a dying breed of innovative artists that make music for the love of it. You can hear the passion and energy in each song. Culturally, he’s bringing nations and various races together to enjoy music. Now, he enters our pages with his latest album, “Golden Age”.

With Gitkin being the passion project of Brian J, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was surprised after the first listen. This is one of the most sonically engaging and complete projects I have heard all year. It is innovative, mesmerizing, and it is colorful. If music could make you see colors, then this album is the one to do it. The album is carried by a subtropical feel while also having records that are rhythmic & percussive driven. It embraces the sound of New Orleans. His guitar work is otherworldly. It’s unique, and his ability to capture multiple influences and sounds through his gift of playing makes him a true talent. My favorite songs were “High Noon”, “Delta Mystic”, & “Ninth Ward Grind”.

Overall, this is a must listen project & I have become a massive fan of this passion project. With that being said, stream the album below and vibe out!
