Have you ever listened to an artist/group that caught your attention on the first listen? If so, what was it that made them stand out. Was it their production or song structure? Or was it their ability to create a sound that you felt relatable? For me, I’m always searching for daring artists that make music for the love of their craft. I yearn to escape my everyday life and immerse myself in the art of someone that I have no connection with. This week, I was impressed when I came across the Freedust.

Freedust is an exceptional music project founded by Italian composer-producer Daniele Carmosino & Swedish singer Lisa Widmark. With over 20 years of making music together, their sound has continued to mature over time. I would consider their sound to be a beautiful mixture of jazz, funk, and hip-hop with soul. For me, they are a breath of fresh air. Their ability to craft records that evoke raw emotions out of their listeners is what makes them so special. They create feel-good melodies, intoxicating beats, raw lyrics, and nostalgic production. Now, the Barcelona-based duo enter our pages with their latest album “Groove Chronicles”.

“Groove Chronicles” is a transformative album that’s a testament to Freedust’s growth. Blending various music styles, the genre-bending project is their magnum opus. From start to finish, the Freedust showcase their songwriting prowess, engaging sonics, and the vocal delivery is a chef’s kiss. My favorite songs from the album were “Did You Hear The News” & “What We've Lost”. “Did You Hear The News” is a bouncy hip-hop styled track that features vocals from Bardo. I enjoyed the percussive elements and the vocal melodies. Sonically, the song structure and instrumentation kept the song interesting from start to finish. This record alone showcased Freedust’s ability to make a generational hit. “What We’ve Lost” was my favorite song from the album. The song is carried by captivating vocals from Angolan singer-rapper Malbreeze, and the strings on this record are otherworldly. I consider this song to be a soulful masterpiece that embraces the nostalgia of the past while staying modern.

Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of 2024. Freedust have proven they have that “IT” factor, so make sure to stream it below!
