When it comes to music discovery, I always find myself searching for artists that are willing to bring listeners into their world. I yearn for artists that are looking to push the boundaries lyrically & sonically. Because of that, I find myself searching for disruptors that refuse to align with the genre norms. Although it’s often hard finding these artists, it feels like I hit the lottery when I do. This week, I came across a diamond in the rough called Radio Haw. Radio Haw is the music project of North Carolina-based artist Matt Gray. With him being from my home state, I was impressed by his musical ability and lyrical prowess. Radio Haw is raw, captivating, and one of my favorite finds. Sonically, Radio Haw’s sound can be described as “bedroom” folk. There is a warmth to the music, and I love how nostalgic it feels. Matt draws influence from his surrounding and allows it to shine through his musical project. Now, Radio Haw enters our pages with his new album “Counsel of Serpents”.

“Counsel of Serpents" is a mesmerizing journey through realms of mystery and introspection. This enigmatic album, with its evocative title, invites listeners to explore the depths of the human psyche while navigating through landscapes of sound.

The album opens with “someone dosed the fiddler," a haunting track that sets the tone for the entire listening experience. Ethereal melodies intertwine with subtle rhythms, creating an atmosphere both alluring and foreboding.

As the album progresses, tracks like "heaven-bent" and "a change" draw listeners deeper into the labyrinthine corridors of the mind. Each composition is a sonic tapestry, weaving together elements of ambient, electronic, and experimental music to create a rich and immersive auditory experience.

“Counsel of Serpents" is a masterful work of artistry and imagination. It's an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers of depth and meaning with each encounter. For those willing to embark on this sonic odyssey, the rewards are plentiful and profound.
