In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it on oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric, and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Kennedy Von Kat.
Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Kennedy Von Kat is a rising artist that has taken the music industry by storm. She is raw, daring, and her sound is captivating at its core. Drawing influence from artists such as Evanescence, Flyleaf, & Pierce The Veil, her music is characterized by its exploration of mental health and personal trauma. Personally, she is one of the most needed artist in the current generation, and she is pioneering a new wave of chart toppers. Now, she debuts on our pages with her new EP “BLOOD ON THE ALTAR”.
“BLOOD ON THE ALTAR” is a 6-track masterpiece that dives into themes of lust, sadness, aggression, & love. For me, this project is her magnum opus, and I loved how she was able to make a song for everyone. Spanning across multiple genres, we get to hear alt-rock, pop-rock, post hardcore, and many more. The project is refreshing to say the least, and her vocals are a chef’s kiss. Mixing her keen ear for production with her otherworldly vocals made this EP extremely timeless. From start to finish I was hooked. To add to the powerful vocal performances, her exceptional songwriting ability was on full display. This is what she had to say about the album:
BOTD: What went into making the EP?
KVK: “It took many years of making I write it all acoustically myself then my producer and I go into the studio and build the song up from the bottom!”
BOTD: Are there any projects or artists that inspired you when creating the album?
KVK: All of inspiration comes from Maggie Lindemann and Evanescence especially the way I like to portray the story I take a lot of inspo from their lyrics and just how they portray their pain through music. As well as Chase Atlantic was a huge inspiration on track 4 “BUDAPEST” I wanted to experiment with the alternative r&b yet almost soft rock vibe they do as they’ve been a favourite of mine since I was a kid!
BOTD: What do you have planned next?
KVK: I’m starting my next project up as of right now! I’ve been in the studio with some new amazing team members such as Michal Hanson of Glass Tigers and we are working on some wicked tunes that should be coming out in early 2025!!!
My favorite songs were “PSYCHODRAMA” & “LIFE SUPPORT”. “PSYCHODRAMA” discusses the hardships of being alone and having trust issues. As someone that has been burned in the past, this song hit me at my core. It was gut-wrenching, and I felt it told so many truths. “LIFE SUPPORT” discusses themes of survival & strength. Over the last 2 months, I have had to deal with the death of my girlfriend, and this song provided the comfort I needed to keep on moving forward.
Overall, this is one of my favorite projects of 2024 so make sure to stream it below!
