Billy Cullum Releases His New Album, “Whatever Happened Next”

Unless you live under a rock, you probably have heard of rising singer-songwriter Billy Cullum. Born and bred in London, the multi-talented singer/actor has been captivating listeners with his emotive singles that will pull at your heart strings. He is the true definition of an artist. Billy has this innate ability to express his feelings through multiple artforms, and he has continued to impress us. After initially hearing his album 'Lonely Hearts Club' in 2017, we have continued to keep a close eye on the singer. Now, 6 years later, he makes a groundbreaking return with his sophomore LP, “Whatever Happened Next”.
“Whatever Happened Next” is one of the most complete projects of the year. It is cohesive sonically and it features some of the most authentic and sensible music. In addition, the vocal performances on the album are exceptional. Cullum’s vocals are a gift from heaven. In a time where music is an unknown place, Billy stands as the shining light. He makes music that’ll make you want to fall in love and be true to yourself. Each record takes you on a journey that you don’t want to end.
As far as my favorites from the album go, “Gold” & “The Key” are unmatched. “Gold” is a reflective song that feels like a conversation with Billy and his younger self. He discusses being fully authentic, and his lyrics illustrate the reality many LGBTQIA+ people face when expressing identity and gender. “The Key” is a must listen. I really loved this record sonically. It is an upbeat gem, and it deserves all the attention. Although all the songs are great, these 2 give you a nice blend of what the album stands for. For me, “Whatever Happened Next” is about exploring your inner thoughts and letting go of what’s been holding you back to find the freedom you deserve.
The album is written by Billy himself and produced by J MAC (Luz, Haux, Matilda Mann) with additional writing from Kaity Rae (girli, Eden Hunter, Liv Dawson). The album is a powerful queer pop journey, glittered with shimmering acoustic guitars, epic backing vocals and euphoric drumbeats which dance alongside soft yet soaring vocals. “Whatever Happened Next’ is a collection of 10 songs that travels from the early years of my life through to my current day experiences as an openly queer artist. The album explores relationships, sexuality, mental health and identity. The sound of the album begins in a folk-pop realm and swells to an epic, anthemic climax before bringing listeners full circle, back to an optimistic, calming close. Rooted in my 90’s youth, these songs take in fluence from nostalgic memories and are glittered with contemporary inspiration. I hope this album finds a home in many hearts. I hope the music speaks to members of the queer community and fierce allies alike. I sat down to write queer, heartfelt pop, and this is ‘Whatever Happened Next”.
