In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across emerging singer-songwriter Beyond the Midwest.
Hailing from Indiana, Beyond the Midwest is an exceptional artist that has captivated listeners with his ability to craft introspective songs that evoke raw emotions. He pours his heart and soul into every record, and the songs discuss topics of loss, inner-strength, perseverance, determination, & hope. Personally, this is the reason he has become one of my favorite artists. He dives fully into his feelings, and he gives listeners a chance to truly connect with music as an art form. That is very rare to find nowadays. Now, he enters our pages with his debut album, “The Comeback”.
“The Comeback” is a daring 8-track album that was written, sung, and composed by Beyond the Midwest. For me, this album came to me at the right time. After losing my girlfriend in October after a short battle with cancer, I have found myself in one of the darkest places I have ever been. This album has given me hope that I can make it through. “The Comeback” has given me enough strength to at least try picking up the pieces. Over the 8 tracks, Beyond the Midwest discusses progress, setbacks, reflection, triumph, and it has an ending that will have you realizing that moving forward is the only answer to t your current pain.
“The Comeback” served as a journal for Beyond the Midwest, and I loved the rawness of the overall sound. This is an album that doesn’t need to sound “perfect”. I loved the experimentation, and I enjoyed how he was able to turn setbacks into triumphs. His personal journey alone is remarkable. Our minds can put us in cages, and we have to dig deep within to unlock ourselves from our own minds. This album has given me hope. My favorite songs were “Sleepless Nights” & “Outside”. “Sleepless Nights” is relatable to my current situation. It’s a love song that finds him yearning for someone that has been absent from his life. I enjoyed the trap drums, and the guitars were a chef’s kiss. “Outside” is a straight banger. The record is laced with an engaging electric guitar opening, and the bouncy beat is enough to make you want to run through a wall.
Overall, this is a must-listen album. This project has become a beacon of hope, and it made me feel heard. With that being said, stream the album below and vibe out!
