Have you ever listened to an artist that caught your attention on the first listen? If so, what made them standout? Was it their cadence? Overall delivery? Songwriting? This week, I came across a rising artist & producer that made me fall in love with music all over again. That duo is MayowaSensei & Zuma.
MayowaSensei is a Tokyo-based R&B & neo-soul singer that is known for his ability to crafting captivating records that are carried by smooth riffs, delicate harmonies, and warm vocals. Sonically, his songs have an R&B tapestry, and they incorporate elements of house & afrobeats, Drawing influence from artists such as Mac Ayers, Snoh Alegra, & H.E.R, his music explores themes of self-reflection, introspection, and he addresses universal truths in the eyes of his own experiences. Recently, he collaborated with the talented Tokyo-based producer Zuma. to craft their latest EP “Ojú Inu”.
“Ojú Inu” is a captivating 4-track EP that into the sounds of Nigerian-American singer Mayowa's heritage, and the influence of his shared environment with Japanese-American producer here in Tokyo. Personally, I loved the textures and rich sounds of the production. It felt like he captured his goal lyrically and sonically, and the EP allows listeners to connect with him on a personal level. I found the project to be cohesive and innovative at its core. Zuma.’s production was the cherry on top.
If you are a fan of artists like Majid Jordan & Sade, you will love this EP. From the silky-smooth vocals to the complex production that was inspired by the spirit of Tokyo, this album is golden. My favorite songs were “EYES” & “MY FAULT”. Overall, this album is a must-listen. So, stream it below and vibe out!
