Hailing from Sacramento, CA, emerging 4-piece band, Arson Whales, have been cultivating a dedicated fanbase with their innate ability to craft innovative alt-rock records that are infectious. Although some refer to the band as a group of shapeshifters and palm readers, their goal is to bless the masses with sonically pleasing records that change the inner workings of each listener’s mind. They are a unique band, and they continue to push the boundaries.
Originating in the Golden State, the band consists of its 4 members Linda Brancato, Joe Kimberlin, Brad Penner & Stephen Linn. With multiple years together as a band, they debut on our pages with their latest album “Galactopus”.
“Galactopus” is the band’s first full length album and it consists of 11 exceptional songs. Overall, it is a cohesive body of work that takes it’s listeners on a sonic journey full of captivating records. If you are someone that has been yearning for genuine music that doesn’t play by the rules, then you need to stop what you are doing and listen.
The album starts with their intro track “Monkey Jar” that has a video game intro that transitions into warm synths and engaging guitars. The hook is strong, and the sonic progressions are crafted to perfection. This is a tone setting song, and It was the perfect record to start the album with. This record sets up the next song “Upside Down”. The pacing of this record is a bit slower, but the instrumentation is otherworldly. “Upside Down” has a very folky rock feel and the guitars riffs are some of the best on the album. In addition, the hook is catchy, and this is one of their most relatable songs on the album.
Another song I thoroughly enjoyed was “Sonic Eclipse”. “Sonic Eclipse” is a groovy record. The drums, guitars, and overall sonics are perfect. I loved the harmonies and lush melodies on this one. In addition, this is the best vocal performance in my opinion. Lastly, with this being a sonic journey, we have to touch on the final track “Blackhole”. It is the perfect ending for the album. It’s upbeat and is laced with lyrics that speak on the ending and the abyss. I wouldn’t call it cathartic, but I feel it rounds out the album as a whole sonically, vocally, and lyrically.
Overall, this is one of my favorite albums this year! With that being said, stream the album below!
