After impressing us with their album “Potatoes on Mars”, Andrea Pizzo and The Purple Mice make their return with their double single “Bombshell”. For those that are new to the Italian group, they are known for their innovative sound that revolves around science. They are intentional at their core, and I find their sound refreshing. Now, they debut on our pages with their double single.

The release features two well-crafted records that show the versatility and growth of their group. The title track “Bombshell” is a dynamic dance-rock record laced with passionate vocals. “Bombshell” is multilayered, and I loved the overall textures sonically. Woven in amidst this is the unique telling of the story of Hedy Lamarr – an inventor and actress made famous during 1940’s and 50’s Hollywood. With the use of synths that help add emphasis to the self-reflective lyrics, the song is carried home by an ear-worm hook that tie everything together. The record shows their exceptional storytelling & vocal performance.

The second track on the double release is The Ballad of Alan Mathison. The Ballad of Alan Mathison prog ballad with a lo-fi intro that takes us back to 1940s London bombed by the Nazis. Sonically, this record is entirely different from the title track. It is piano-led and features crackled vintage vocals, unpredictable melodies, and it builds up to a more explosive rock expression.

Inventing and science are the central themes of the two new singles. Both Hedy Lamarr and Alan Turing had a phenomenal impact on today’s society, with the former being considered the creator of Wifi and Bluetooth, and the latter deciphering the Enigma code to essentially free Europe from Nazi rule (as well as gifting us the now infamous AI). This is what the group had to say:

"We were interested in talking about these two great, unfortunate and forgotten inventors who have had such a great impact on contemporary society - explains Andrea Pizzo of The Purple Mice – Hedy Lamarr is considered the inventor of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth among other things, Alan Turing is the one who theorized artificial intelligence and saved England and Europe from Nazi rule by deciphering the Enigma code. Both during their lives, especially at the end, were victims of prejudice and human wickedness. We felt it was our duty to celebrate them."

The two singles come out accompanied by their respective video clips.  The Purple Mice designed them with the help of generative AI and are available on Youtube. With that being said, stream the new releases below!
