Hailing from Japan, production duo, AmPm have been making waves globally with their infectious electronic sound. Their music is exceptional sonically, and it has elements that will pull you in with every listen. Many artists find it hard to find their own sound, but AmPm create an entire world within their sound. They take you on a sonic journey.
For those that are new to the duo, the group made their debut in 2017 with their single “Best Part of Us feat. Michael Kaneko”. The same year, they were the only Japanese artist to perform at Spotify On Stage, a festival in Indonesia hosted by Spotify. In 2018, they dominated stages around the world, from Ultra Miami to shows in Korea and Japan, and even a headline concert in New York. In addition to releasing their own original music, AmPm have remixed tracks by popular overseas artists such as Afrojack, R3HAB and Nicky Romero, along with remixes for renowned Japanese artists like Gesu no Kiwami Otome ( ‘Black Parade’ ) and MONKEY MAJIK ( ‘Tokyo Lights’ ), and production for Ken Hirai’ s track “Holic”. Now, they debut on our pages with their new album “Traveling Without Moving”.
On their latest album, the masked duo craft a captivating album that encapsulates the essence of exploration, experiences, and personal reflections on traveling. The lyrics are exceptional, and the album sonically draws from various electronic genres. For me, the 16-track album takes listeners on a sonic journey through Tokyo, Jakarta, Amsterdam and New York City. The music is otherworldly, and I find it so intoxicating.
I love how they touch on how integral traveling is to their music, and it serves as a window into their personal stories and travel-related pursuits. “Traveling Without Moving” is an audible journey of all their experiences. For me, my favorite tracks are “Haven”, “Fall Back”, & “Streets of Tokyo”.
“Streets of Tokyo” is laced with serene synths, lush melodies, and dynamic sonics that will knock you off your feet. Michael Kaneko’s smooth vocals are the cherry on top, and it really makes me feel like I’m in the streets of Tokyo taking in all the lights and sounds. To stay on the topic of Tokyo, “Fall Back” is another record that finds it’s setting in the capital of Japan. The record shines with its futuristic synths, peppy bass line, and it will have you yearning to take a trip to Tokyo. In my opinion, the duo have this innate ability to craft singles that are laced with atmospheric tones and peppy bass lines. For me, “Haven” is my favorite record. The song is a pulsing masterpiece that will truly make you fall in love with their innovative sound. Overall, this has been one of my favorite musical experiences this year. With that being said, stream the record below and vibe out.
