When it comes to music, I am always searching for artists that defy genre norms and push the boundaries. I yearn to hear the unheard, and I fight for the those that I believe deserve to have a voice. Although the industry is very saturated, there are these rare times where I come across a diamond in the rough. This week, I was impressed when I came across emerging artist Alistair Futura.
Hailing from Columbia, MO, emerging singer-songwriter, Alistair Futura, has captured audiences with his raw and dynamic bedroom-pop sound. His distinctive style and moody aesthetic have made him a burgeoning star, and his ability to create dreamy records allows him to offer the industry a refreshing sound. Although he is only a teen, there is so much potential there. The last time I felt this excited about a young artist was when I heard Billie Eilish for the first time in 2015. With various parallels between the two, I’m happy I found him early enough to say he will be a star. Although he only has two handfuls of songs out, you can tell that he already has a sound. Now, he debuts on our pages with his latest EP “bloom later”.
“bloom later” is a reflective EP that is carried by dreamy & melodic records that capture Alistair’s whole persona. Alistair wrote, produced, recorded, & mixed the entire project, and I believe that’s what makes it so special. His ability to engage with every step of the process allows each song to personally capture his feelings and ideas. Whether the songs were moody or dreamy, you could feel that he had a hand in every aspect of the song from the sonics to the vocals. I’m a sucker for DIY-artists that create a lo-fi bedroom pop sound. I love the reverb-soaked vocals, rich soundscape, and the drowned out vocal mixes. For me, this album sounds like Joji but even better.
My favorite songs were “alright” & “bleed for me”. “alright” was the intro track, and it’s an introspective song laced with warm piano keys, drowned out vocals, and captivating melodies. The hook was exceptional, and his vocal delivery was a chef’s kiss. My personal favorite song was “bleed for me”. I loved the percussive elements and his hypnotic rhythm. This record put me in a trance, and I found myself contemplating love, life, and the future. Overall, this EP is everything that is missing in music, It is risky, refreshing, raw, and otherworldly. This is one of the best projects I have come across this year so stream it below!
