The power of family is something I don’t see discussed enough within music, but Destiny Rogers’ new song ‘West Like’ that features Kalan.FrFr gives a personal take on her family and her roots. The single is a celebratory record that explores her love for where she is from and how she wants others to experience the beauties of her city just like she does. The song is introspective and well written. In addition, the production has a “Bay-Area” feel that adds to the west coast vibe I believe she was aiming for. All in all, the song is a knockout and the video that accompanies it further expresses the heartfelt lyrics.
The video was shot in South Central L.A., and it is inspired by Destiny’s upbringing in a Mexican household. The video starts with a “typical scene at home” where her mom and grandma are cooking and asking her about her plans. With her being a native of Lodi, California, she was heavily inspired musically by her mother’s love of Mariachi music and her father’s love of AC/DC. Due to her being influenced by many different genres, it’s amazing to see her find her own voice and use it to culminate a fresh sound that represents her effectively. As the video progresses we see Destiny and Kalan cruise the streets with lowrider bikes and head to a backyard party that is reminiscent of her family gatherings. The video is nostalgic and has a cinematic touch that is very genuine. With that being said, you can watch the video above!
Lyrics That Stick:
“Don’t get caught up in the lights
Cause you will never make it back
Cause this city, this town Is so much more than that”
