With over a decade of experience under her belt, Willow Smith has been taking the correct steps in finding her identity as a person and as an artist. Due to spending most of her early years touring with her mother’s band and having the ability to experiment with her sound, the pandemic seems to have given the global artist time to craft out a new lane for herself. In her new offering ‘Transparent Soul’ that features Travis Barker, Smith channels her pop-punk influences to craft an expressive record that explores the reality of recognizing the inner beauty and ugliness that we all have within. In addition to releasing the song, Willow also gifted us a performance visual to bring together the release.
The Dana Trippe-directed visual has a nostalgic touch due to the fish-eye effects and the VHS elements within the video. In my opinion, it helps set the tone of the visual due to the fact that the song seems like a record from the late 90s to early 2000s. In the video, Willow is seen masked with rock fashion and eye-catching make-up that brings this new version of herself to light. Overall, the video is a great representation of the new Willow, and we can’t wait for her new album to drop.
Lyrics That Stick:
“All your little fake friends will sell your secrets for some cash
Smile in my face then put your cig out on my back
If you ever see me just get to runnin like the flash”
