I don’t know what’s in the water in Memphis but whatever Jon Waltz is drinking is something out of this world. Over the last 7 years, the Memphis-based singer/rapper has captivated listeners with his innate ability to craft introspective records that are carried by effortless bars and catchy hooks. I remember hearing his single “Bang” 7 years ago, and I knew he was destined for greatness. As the years passed, he continued his streak of genre-bending anthems such as “Justified”, “Anna”, “Luna”, and my personal favorite “Plastic Beach” which is still unreleased. Now, he is back with his latest single “Trainwreck”, and this has to be my favorite. The song is laced with smooth melodies, raw lyrics, and an exceptional feature by Verzache.
The record is very important to me due to the personable lyrics laced within the song’s comforting chords and laser-like synths. Jon and Verzache discuss embracing change and Waltz reflects on his career as an artist in a fast-moving industry. Although Waltz has seen himself consume the weight of life’s trouble, he always pushes the idea of not worrying about it because he will be okay. Overall, the song is the start of a new era for Waltz, and it is the first release off of his upcoming EP “My Golden Horse”.
