After transitioning from hip-hop to punk-rock, Machine Gun Kelly has continued to rise due to his ability to fully embrace a sound that seems so him that it’s contagious. To be fair, I loved his rap songs, but it seems that all the years were preparation for what we are getting now. MGK is an icon, and it seems like he has finally found a home where he can be fully original. In his new single “papercuts”, he discusses the mixed feelings and emotions due to newfound success. The single is very relatable in the fact that I feel we as people have been in situations where we have gotten more attention due to the success we were having. Although it can seem fake at times. MGK wants you to know that he is fully himself and aware of how the world will spin him.
In the Cole Bennett-directed visual for the song, we see a bald MGK standing in a moving room with nothing but his guitar. As the video transitions, we see the rockstar and his favorite collaborator Travis Barker going hard before seeing MGK judged and demonized by those around him. In the end, it seems as if MGK won’t let these sharp cuts hurt him because he knows he is creating a culture and following around what he is becoming. The video is informative and it has quickly become one of my favorite videos from him. If you need a pick me up this week, stream the video above!
Lyrics That Stick:
“Bleach my hair, mess it up
Take my life, dress it up
Signed a deal, I got papercuts
They wanted them but they got us”
