Nicholas Carpenter, an Alaska native better known as Medium Build, tackles the topic of “White Male Privilege” in his latest single. This unique indie-alternative artist is currently taking on a very up-and-coming genre of music. His style reminds us of a similar popular artist, Role Model.
Medium Build has this devigne quality within his music that brings this carefree, relaxed emotion to listeners. While listening to most of his songs, no matter the topic, he maintains a tranquil state in every song. In “White Male Privilege,” this artist summarizes his journey through his past, present, and future as a white male in this world. As someone not under said category, it was very eye-opening how honest he was. He described how he was told to do his best, and everything should work out. He also touches on experiences he’s faced that others who aren’t white males could have encountered differently.
As the song transitions, Medium Build speaks of not knowing where he went wrong. He also paints this picture of a stereotypical “American Dream” of getting married, having kids for the sake of it, and owning multiple homes. We commend him for approaching this topic in a very original and thought-provoking way. There was an air of blatant honesty in Medium Build’s songs that we appreciate and seek. He tends to be more comfortable than most taking about the uncomfortable, and that’s one of the reasons this artist is so special. Whether you’re a white male or not, this single is worth a listen!
Lyrics That Stick: “I’ve been handed life advice. Be a good hanging, decent guy. Shit should work out for you mostly.”
