When it comes to emotional guitar-driven records that mesh elements of hip-hop and rock into one sound, Phil Smooth is second to none. With his new record ‘Both Sides’, he showcases why he is one of the most versatile upcoming artists at the moment. After initially gaining my attention with his single ‘Fake Love’, Phil Smooth is back with another hit in ‘Both Sides’. The lyricism on the track is more mature than what I have heard from him before, and the song has a great groove sonically. Although I hear elements of Juice WRLD in his music, the emerging artist always finds a way to bring his own sauce to his records that separate him from the pack. In addition to the hot single, the artist also delivered a visual to accompany the song.
In the Levi Desantis-directed video, we see Phil rapping in front of a pink backdrop and then transitioning to expressing his pain in a dim-lit room. As the video progresses, his raw emotion and imagery in his lyrics can be felt as he cruises in a speeding car to the tempo of 808s that kick from the production. Overall, the video is a great representation of the song, and I can’t wait to hear more from the rising rapper.
Lyrics That Stick:
“I’ve been on my way
Just getting started
Take of my business
Now they see me and they salty
They don’t wanna see me winning”
