When it comes to new music, I’m a sucker for exceptional vocals that carry raw feelings that evoke emotions that you never thought you could feel. In my opinion that is what I think makes great music. As a kid, I always searched for singles that made me feel seen or heard, and I always hold those song’s close to heart. This week, I was blessed to hear a new single from Detroit singer-songwriter Yoshi Flower that made me have that feeling again.
On his latest single “Star Shopping”, Yoshi Flower touches on isolation as well as hope. The single is a cover of the late artist Lil Peep’s single, and it comes after his release of his stripped down cover of Juice WRLD’s “Wishing Well”. In his cover of “Star Shopping”, Yoshi takes a softer approach and his raw and often tender vocals float over his acoustic guitar.
About his cover choice, Yoshi says:
When I was lost in my addiction, I constantly listened to Peep. I related to how he spoke of using drugs as a way to feel okay; but he also showed the dangers and the comedowns. When he passed, I was devastated. Fentanyl is ripping our youth apart and it isn’t being discussed enough. Peep is another beautiful soul we lost too soon to addiction and the fentanyl epidemic. His passing is an urgent wake up call.
With that being said, if you are in need of a single to help get you through the hard times, add this song to your playlists and vibe out.
