In the current state of the music industry, it is extremely hard at times to discover songs that I find truly captivating. I’m always yearning for singles that push the boundaries and really create a space that feels different than everything else floating in our airwaves. This week, I was blessed to discover emerging singer-songwriter Skel. Although I’m fairly new to his sound, his music raw and it meshes many different genres into one exciting sound.
On his latest single “grow up”, Skel delivers and alt-pop banger that is laced with emo elements that will surely evoke emotions. With this being the first single we have heard from him, all I can say is that he impressed us with his latest offering. Skel discusses about the story of a person of power who created the universe, hence the cover-art. The so called “lord” views the earth that he created as a kid. He recalls that the world used to be so bright and that he himself believes in the fact that it is time to grow up. He also talks about his life as a human in which he is chasing after something that is outside of the earth and that he wishes to go back to the sky to become the “lord” he used to be. The lord finds someone on earth who is also looking for something that they cant find. He tries to tell them that they wont find what they are looking for and that they are running in circles. He always sees the person with another “dude” which probably refers to a male person and is related to different relationships. He talks about the sun going down and how its time for the person to run again, possibly telling us that the person always runs around in circles when the sun is gone. In the chorus the childish version of him comes out as he bursts out and repeats the sentence “na na na na na”. When the chorus ends, the lord commands his childish-self to stop it, as he is taking it too far. He recommends the childish lord to go far away from him because he knows that he can’t handle growing up and the lord wants to spare him that. in the pre-chorus he again refers to the person on earth who runs around in circles at night and their relationships with different males. The childish lord returns for his last chorus and inside of his chorus he tells his adult-self that he doesn't want to leave and that they were in a lovely situation as they were holding hands, he says. The lord begins to wash away his perception of mind and his childish-self wonders what he is doing with the lord and if he is now an angel that is on some kind of mission. Overall, this has to be one of the most introspective and captivating singles we have heard lately.
With that being said, if you are in need of a single to help get you through the hard times, add this song to your playlists and vibe out.
