Raine Bears It All On Her Latest, “Incognito”

After claiming her as an artist to watch, Raine has continued to impress me with her sheer talent & ability to connect. She is my definition of a true artist. With a sound that blends alt-pop & bedroom-pop, Raine crafts a sound that draws back the curtains of her personal life. Raine is one of one. The LA-based singer is bringing back integrity to music, and she has continued to wear her heart on her sleeves. Months back, she landed on my radar with her introspective single “Tuesday”. Now, she makes her return with her latest single “Incognito”.

“Incognito” is the title track off of her upcoming EP and it’s a masterpiece. Over the melancholic sonics, Raine shines with her soft vocal approach. The record is laced with engaging instrumentation and the lush melodies allow her voice to carry the song. For me, the song is a confessional about a traumatic experience she went though. It’s her therapeutic response to reclaim the pieces of herself that she lost. In her own words, Raine states:

“This song is about the pain of vulnerability and the even greater ache without it. When my sister was dying, I felt like being seen crying (being seen “weak” in my mind) was the worst thing in the world. I learned to hold in my tears, smile brightly, and laugh off touchy subjects until I could no longer be vulnerable with anyone, not even myself. I wrote incognito after I cracked: when all the tears I kept behind jokes and smiles finally spilled out and I was helpless to stop it. I was in a lecture and hid in a nearby garden until I could compose myself. As I waited for the tears to stop, I wrote about how painful it is to grieve and how hard it is to allow vulnerability but how grateful I was to grieve and how much worse it is to deprive yourself of it. It is both a confession and a reclamation.”

Raine proves once again that she is ready to become a household name. I haven’t seen or heard of an artist with her talent in a long time. She’s genuine, vulnerable, and she knows how to express herself. Raine is the star of tomorrow.
