In today’s industry, artists are more innovative and creative than ever. A kid can produce, write, and record from the confines of their bedroom and have a Billboard topping hit. As the days of rules and genres in the industry fade, we continue to be introduced to artists that are shifting the overall paradigm of artistry. However, with saturation, we sometimes lose the sense of why we listen to music in the first place. Due to oversaturation of music, it feels like artists aren’t making music that fully connects anymore. Where are the artists that make me want cry? Who is really trying to bring awareness around real world issues? For me, an artist that has continued to grow and excel is rising singer MOP!. After impressing me earlier this year with his project “WAKE UP, IT’S SUMMER”, the rising singer returns to our pages with his latest offering “he’s forgetting himself”.
The single tells the story of a boy who is truly struggling with addiction and desires help. Although he gets help, the cycle repeats. As time passes, he starts to forget who he is and ultimately feels like he's lost himself. This is a feeling that I myself have struggled with when I went through substance abuse, so it is great to have a song I can connect with like this. With the grunge-esque feel on the sonics and MOP!’s crooning vocals, the song evokes emotions that feel raw and genuine. At times, the song has elements that remind me of the late XXXTENTACION with MOP!’s own feel. Overall, this is a record that demands to be heard so stream the single below!
