When it comes to music discovery, it’s always a great feeling when you find an emerging artist with a refreshing sound. For me, that is often hard at times due to the oversaturation of music we are faced with on a regular basis. However, there are those few times far and between where I find an artist I truly connect with. This week, I came across Birmingham, AL-born singer/songwriter Phoenix James, and she is an artist that you need to have in your playlists.

On her latest single “Heart Attack”, she delivers an emotional record that deals with topics of change, pain, and heartbreak. Although she is 19-years-old, James has a very soft touch with her approach vocally which makes her song’s so inviting. In addition, her songwriting is well-beyond her years. Over the song’s runtime, I found myself falling in a trance as I realized the true pain she was embracing during the time she wrote this song. “Heart Attack” is a song that I truly see as therapy and I play it every time I feel inadequate or not loved. This is what Phoenix had to say about the song:

“Heart Attack was written on a plane back from the trip in the experience that I narrate in the song. I had just been dumped by an ex, hopeful that we'd patch things together after they invited me to New York for New Year's Eve. The first night of the trip, it was revealed to me through a text notification I saw on their phone that they were in a new relationship. The confusion, hurt and frustration of them trying to hold my hand as we spent a beautiful night ice skating and running around the city is captured in Heart Attack. A delusional, unrequited love song.”

Overall, the single is one of our favorite releases that we have found recently so make sure to listen to her new EP “New Stages” that features this single below.
