Monochrome Midnight Traveller Drop Their Mesmerizing EP, “Reality Spaces”

By: Chris Buxton IG: @chrisbuxtonllg

Known for their thoughtfully curated audiovisual presentations, emerging duo, Monochrome Midnight Traveller, invites listeners on a sonic journey that explores the vibrance of city nights. With roots that trace back to Shanghai, the duo uses ambient, breakbeat, hip hop, and downtempo electronic sounds to craft a universal work of art. The pair are architects of urban soundscapes, creators of atmospheres, and masters of a minimalist aesthetic that allow them to create their own world through their craft. They are world renowned hitmakers with a knack for allowing true beauty to shine through their music. Although I am new to their discography, they enter our pages with their sonically pleasing new EP, “Reality Spaces”.

The project is a reflection of where the duo is at. Laced with somber tones, ear-candy hooks, and exceptional sonic arrangement, the project showcases the very best of Monochrome Midnight Traveller. Their songs are intentional, and they have a rawness that is easy to connect with. By connecting their music with their captivating visual, they allow the listener to immerse themselves in their world making it an almost outer body experience.

With “Reality Spaces” being their debut EP, it offers a glimpse of what a minimalistic bass heavy late-night music can be, an alternative listen on how heavy distorted and wobbly bass and punishing kick could be repurposed for a chilled alternate take for after hours listening. It’s still electronica, it’s still trippy, brooding, spacey and pensive, but rather minimal take on blending the electronic sub-genre gave its steady, easy-listening vibe.

Both songs on the 2-track EP are exceptional. he EP opens with the track “Reality”. The record is a progressive downtempo electronica track laced with ethereal female vocal lines, engaging synths, and a laid-back beat. “Reality” blurs the lines of imagination & reality while inviting listeners into a sonic masterclass. The second track, “Spaces” takes us further into the innerworkings of the duo’s creative sound. “Spaces” is carried by stretching synth tones, glistening vocals, & dissonant synth riffs. Overall, the EP is one of the most captivating projects I have heard all year. Monochrome Midnight Traveller have won me over as a fan, and I can’t wait to hear more. Until then, stream their EP below and vibe out!
