Hailing from Vancouver, emerging rapper, Raw Soul, has been on a hot run recently. After releasing his singles “True Talk”, “Better Days”, & “Moment”, I knew he was special. He raps with precision, and his vocal delivery is exceptional. By eschewing the pursuit of fame and embracing an authentic style of storytelling, the Vancouver rapper has quietly built up an impressive catalog of releases. His music is reflective, and it has a way of connecting with many. His relatable topics matched with his self-expression creates a sound that you can’t turn away from. Now, he enters our pages with his latest EP “Daniel-San (Demos)”. Taking some influence from the “Karate Kid” when it comes to the name, the EP is the kick of reality that we all need at the moment.
The EP is a collection of songs that are story driven with themes of struggle, life lessons, a little braggadocio, and some moments of vulnerability. When discussing the project, Raw Soul had this to say, “I chose the name Daniel-San as I feel a sort of kinship with the title character from the Karate Kid, and though there aren’t many direct references to the film within these set of tracks, there is some common ground with Daniel.”
Although it is a collection of songs, each record has its own identity. On his song “Peaks & Valleys”, Raw Soul’s flows are surgical, and his lyrics are exceptional. I love how his vocal presence deserves to be heard. In addition, the hook is extremely catchy, and he didn’t have to sing on it to make it “radio-like”. Raw Soul is taking the unconventional route and he’s not trying to conform with the cookie cutter viral game that the industry wants to push. “Peaks & Valleys” is a great song for those that love introspective and conscience rap. Another single that I have to highlight is “Growing Pains (Confessions)”. Sonically, it is the best song on the project. With smooth sonics, lush melodies, engaging guitars, and solid arrangement, the single blends perfectly with Raw Soul’s raspy vocals. For me the 6-song EP is sharp and has great pacing.
