In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Pork Bun.
Hailing from the greater Philadelphia area, Pork Bun is a captivating artist that has become a distinctive voice in the contemporary electronic scene. For me, Pork Bun has this innate ability to blend elements of psychill, downtempo, and ambient music into one beautifully crafted sound. The artist is raw, daring, and captivating. In an industry that likes to play it safe and almost seems formulaic, Pork Bun continues to push the boundaries. Innovation is key to growth, and the music industry needs artists like Pork Bun. Although I’m fairly new to the artist, Pork Bun makes his BangerOfTheDay debut with his latest album “Big Bobbi”.
“Big Bobbi” is an explorative album that takes listeners on a sonic journey they won’t want to end. Over the 10-tracks, Pork Bun embraces their own artistry & delivers an album that is carried by laid-back beats, engaging synths, and ambient textures that bring you into another world. Personally, I found the melodies and sonics to be otherworldly. Recently, we had the chance to speak with Pork Bun about the creation process and meaning behind the album:
BOTD: “What went into the creation process of the album?”
Pork Bun: “I try to draw inspiration from anything I can, a lot of the times it'll be from nature or, oddly enough, traditional Irish folk music. Usually, I'll create a skeleton of a song, so the whole thing without any variations or effects, and listen to it repeatedly. As I listen to the song, again and again, I'll tweak things and when I no longer can stand to listen to it, I'll usually call it complete, until a few days pass, and I second-guess myself. If I can no longer think of any possible changes to a song, that's when I'll call it completed!”
BOTD: “What is your favorite record from the album?”
Pork Bun: “It's hard to pick a favorite track from the album, I imagine it's like picking your favorite child. "Warm Gyoza" holds a special place in my heart because it's a remix of my first ever song, and it samples an anime I love (Dorohedoro). Not to give a cop-out answer, but my favorite song will always be the one someone tells me is their favorite!”
BOTD: “What does the album mean to you?”
Pork Bun: “This album represents growth for me as a musician. My 20's had a lot of rough patches and my other projects reflected this, but now I'm staring down my 30's and I'm trying to change my outlook and be more positive, existential hope instead of dread. I hope my music can bring some positivity to others!”
If you are looking to transport to another world and leave your worries behind, this album is the gateway to internal freedom. When I listen to the album, I feel like all my worries go away, and there’s a peace I feel inside. That is how I know this is great music. The songs that impacted me the most were “Song of the Forest”, “Cherry Blossom”, & “Court Jester”. I believe that those songs are influential to the entire album listening experience, and they are a good introduction for new listeners to the artist.
If you are looking for an album that will change your innerworkings as a person, this is the album for you. It is innovative, captivating, and the music will leave a last impacting. The best word to describe the album is timeless. “Big Bobbi” is a timeless masterpiece, and you can stream it below!
