With roots that trace back to humble beginnings in Massachusetts, emerging Hip-Hop group, Notorious Outsiders, have taken the industry by storm. Made up of MDogg, Jazzy Belle, Syness, Marcus McCloud, K.O The Artist, Killa H4, & Ca$hMani, the 7-member group have been captivating listeners with a sound that draws inspiration from rap, soul, & boom-bap. For me, each member brings a unique sound to the table & I consider their music to have a melting pot of influence. Now, the debut on our pages with their groundbreaking album “The Second Coming”.
“The Second Coming” is the second album from the emerging rap group, and it is worth all the praise. For me, I loved how cohesive the project was from a sonic standpoint. In an industry that praises albums that sound more like playlists, Notorious Outsiders release an album that I would consider to be their magnum opus. Following their album “Hidden Sounds from the Underground”, their latest album shows their growth as rappers, singers, and songwriters. Whether they sample gospel vocals or dive into national discourse (i.e Tory Lanez bar), they consciously craft an album that is relatable to all. Some of the themes they tackle are religion, ageing, social issues, & personal growth. In addition, some of the bars on this album were insane. They mentioned Tory Lanez, Taraji P. Hinson, & Joe Johnson to name a few.
My favorite songs from the album were “Speeding Past Time”, “Umbilical”, “Fallen Angels”, & “Notorious”. “Speeding Past Time” was my personal favorite. I loved the sample and the pacing of the beat. This record had elements that reminded me of Common’s record “Go”. In addition, I loved the hook, and the bars about Ron Weasley and Tory Lanez went crazy. “Umbilical” is laced with pleasant keys and a hard-hitting 808 that elevates their vocals. The group rapped with precision, and the delivery was strong. “Fallen Angels” tackles a more introspective theme about inner struggles & grasping on to hate that comes with society. Over the record, they discuss their faith and need to hold on to those that paved the way and leave their mark. “Notorious” is the best record sonically. I loved the melodic feel that reminds me of the late 90s early 2000s west coast production (i.e Dom Kennedy). Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of the year so stream it below!
