When it comes to music discovery, I always find myself searching for artists that are willing to bring listeners into their world. I yearn for artists that are looking to push the boundaries lyrically & sonically. Because of that, I find myself searching for disruptors that refuse to align with the genre norms. Although it’s often hard finding these artists, it feels like I hit the lottery when I do. This week, I came across a diamond in the rough called Megan Winsor. Megan Winsor is an emerging singer-songwriter from SoCal. Sonically, Winsor’s sound can be described as mixture of Maggie Rogers & Hayley Williams. There is a warmth to the music, and I love how nostalgic it feels. Megan draws influence from her surroundings and allows it to shine through her music. Now, she enters our pages with her new album “INTERMISSION”.
“INTERMISSION” is an 8-track masterpiece, & I consider it to be her magnum opus. The rising singer bears it all as she discusses the feel of being lost after finishing school. This uncertainty can feel suffocating when you look around and feel like you are being left behind. Using her immense talent, Megan crafts a collection of indie-ballads the dive into these feelings. With themes of love, loss, jealousy, & freedom can all be heard in her songwriting. For me, I felt seen and heard listening to this album. The feelings conveyed are something we all experience. This is what Megan had to say about the album:
“I started writing this project while I was feeling very lost. I had just finished school and it felt like I was just waiting, waiting for something to happen. It was almost as if the first act of my life had ended and I was in this weird intermission period, waiting for the next act to start. The themes of the songs vary from love, loss, jealousy, and those nights out trying to forget what's really happening in the daylight. Together, these songs really sum up the past two years of my life, filled with contemplation, fun, and living in the moment amidst all the uncertainty.”
My favorite songs were “Cruel” & “Sure”. “Cruel” is a catchy record that is laced with soft pop melodies, a warm acoustic guitar riff, and Winsor’s vocals are otherworldly. In my opinion this is one of the most relatable songs lyrically. Over the song’s duration, Winsor captures the feeling of being young and clueless. She shares how she’s lost while those around her are taking their next steps in life. Winsor is at an age where it feels weird to ask for help, but she also feels young enough to still need support. “Sure” is a song that deals with the uncertainty of the future. Her vocals felt rawer on this record. You could feel her emotion and the uneasiness in her vocals. Vocally, this was her best song. The hook was exceptional, and I loved the overall song structure. These two songs were absolutely flawless.
After giving the album a few listens, it has become one of the soundtracks to my summer. Megan Winsor is a star, and she deserves to be heard. Stream her album below and vibe out!
