Under the thousands of songs & artists I listen to on a daily basis, it is often hard finding generational talents that I believe will stand the test of time. However, from time to time, I come across an artist or song that really hits me. This week I was impressed when I came across Mary Middlefield.

Hailing from Lausanne, Switzerland, the burgeoning star is known for natured-inspired sounds that evoke raw emotions out of her listeners. She is a songstress that is finally spreading her wings. For me, I would consider her a pioneer of the next generation of music artists. She’s raw, ethereal, and her vocals are captivating. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Radiohead and the people that surround her, her songs have the ability to shift between bliss and a dreamy nightmare. However, that is what makes her so relatable. Just like the rest of us, she goes through various emotions, and I love how she bears it all in her music. Now, she debuts on our pages with her latest EP “Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)”.

“Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)” is an exceptional 8-track EP that details the aftermath of a tumultuous relationship. With her captivating vocals, she takes listeners on a relatable sonic journey that will ring true to those that have had relationship troubles. The songs all build on each other as they dive into the emotions and disconnect in a relationship that feels broken and one-sided. Like many relationships, the EP starts sweet and builds into a rocky whirlwind before leaving listeners with a soft farewell. I loved the story and lyricism on the project, and I found Mary’s vocals intoxicating. My favorite songs were “Atlantis”, “Hearts Desire”, & “Love me, Love me not?”. Those songs were the most relatable to me, and I find myself using them as the soundtrack of my life. Although I didn’t know Middlefield before this week, I can say that she has impressed me all around. She is a breath of fresh air, and her latest project deserves a listen.
