Crossing sonic boundaries with her innate ability to craft infectious records, rising singer, Maiz, is an artist that I just can’t stop listening to. She is compelling, and she has continued to bless her listeners with a sound that is equally raw and relatable. In a time where it feels like there aren’t too many artists breaking through, Maiz defies all odds. She is the burgeoning star that we have all been waiting for. Now, the 21-year-old singer makes her grand entrance with her highly anticipated EP “Short Circuit”.
The 7-track EP is a testament to her mature songwriting and exceptional vocal range. With a voice of an angel, she carefully crafts each record with precision. Each record builds on the next, and her cohesive soundscape takes you on a journey that you won’t want to end. She’s mesmerzing, and I haven’t seen an artist at this stage have so much drive and maturity. Although she was once a bedroom pop singer, she has truly emerged as a force to be reckoned with.
For me, the EP is a stepping stone to show how far she has come from her small town roots. It is her magnum opus. Drawing us in with her heavenly vocals, “Short Circuit” chronicles the journey of two energies colliding causing a fire that eventually fizzles out. When your young, love feels so attainable until you realize it doesn’t always work out. Whether it’s bad timing or the wrong person, it can feel like a knife in the back when things come to a dramatic ending. Although we may try to salvage it or come up with endless solutions, sometimes love runs out of time and fizzles out like a fire.
My favorite records from the album were “Runners High”, & “Swimming Ghost”. “Runner High” is an infectious record that is laced with warm vocal tones, engaging percussion, and the guitar melodies are otherworldly. With grunge elements, Maiz delivers an angsty single about the thrill of chasing after someone that’s unattainable. The high of potentially having what you can’t is the main them of the record. With her ear-worm hook, Maiz shines in a way that makes me want to keep this record on repeat. “Swimming Ghost” shows her versatility and exceptional talent as a songwriter. Lyrically, the single is a heartbreak anthem that explores how hard it is to get over someone when you’re constantly reminded of your past. The imagery in her lyrics is sublime. In my opinion, this was her best vocal track. I could feel her pain and raw emotions bleeding through each note. I don’t know if I have ever truly been scene until I listened to this project. It is the most complete project I have heard in the last few months, and it deserves to be heard. Greatness doesn’t always come around so make sure to listen to this generational talent before she’s a household name!
