Kehlani - It Was Good Till It Wasn’t (Album Review)

Well, well, well… look who it is! Our favorite little lady from the Bay! This time however, she’s bringing an entire album to the stage and it’s well… glorious! ‘It Was Good Till It Wasn’t,’ is bringing all the heat you’d expect with Kehlani and ceases to disappoint us at all!

‘Toxic’ was the first song on the list and we all already have dived into this song so deep we know it word for word! She then brings in another fan favorite Tory Lanez in on the second song ‘Can I,’ and they made it so worth while. The premises behind this album, obviously being a relationship that was good till it wasn’t, but there’s so much more to come.

These songs encompassed not just a typical story of a bad relationship that shouldn’t have started in the first place, but all the juicy, heart wrenching waves that sit beneath the seams. The way Kehlani used the water signs of the zodiac within her lines of ‘Water’ was so interesting and thrilling, being an astrology nerd myself. The soulful quality throughout this song and the next, ‘Change Your Life',’ with Jhene Aiko actually Changed OUR Life!

Isn’t it crazy to think that literally everyone has insecurities, even the stars. Kehlani really showed her vulnerable side throughout ‘Everybody Business,’ and we loved the concept she displayed of the fat that, yes, everybody does talk about business that isn’t theirs. However, you don’t have to let that phase you, just pay no mind! She even incorporated this retro, throwback, R&B, Destiny’s Child vibe throughout ‘Serial Lover’ and it had this very fresh feel to it we clung to.

Lucky Daye made his entrance in this album as well in ‘Can You Blame Me’ and we have to say it’s one of the favorites off the entire album with how well-developed and strong the entire song was from start to finish. There wasn’t a moment in this song we raised our shoulders and thought it could’ve gone differently, they fucking killed it!

Even the outro to the album was unique and very dear to Kehlani’s heart as she featured Lexii Alijai her friend and an upcoming rapper that had passed, as the last thing we heard. There was such a gripping sensation when listening to that, that really tied the album together as a whole and gave it very different meanings depending on interpretation. As Kehlani says ‘It Was Good Till It Wasn’t’ and we’ll leave you with that.

Lyrics That Stick:

“Don Julio made me a fool for you

And now I might hit your phone up with a ra-ra-ra

Missin’ my da-da-da,

Missin’ that ah-ah-ah.”
