When it comes to music discovery, I am always search for bands that push the boundaries and bring you into their world. In a time where most modern music feels formulaic, I yearn for the bands that are making music that I consider healing. There is nothing like listening to a song or album that you connect with. For me, listening to music that gives me goosebumps is a high that I chase every time I play a new artist. Although the industry is saturated with artists and music emerging daily, I still find a way to come across hidden gems that are moving music forward. This week, I came across M. Byrd.

Hailing from Germany, M. Byrd is a captivating singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Personally, I consider him to be one of the most innovative artists in the indie-pop genre, and his vocals are a chef’s kiss. He is raw, daring, and his sound evokes raw emotions out of his listeners. Although he does have an indie-pop tapestry, his genre-bending sound also carries shoegaze, alternative, and adult-contemporary elements blended into one unique sound. Now, he debuts on our pages with his latest EP “In Breech”.

“In Breech” is a 5-track project dives into the theme of new beginnings. Since becoming a father for the first time, we are able to hear the personal growth & maturity of M. Byrd. Sonically, the records are carried by rich & dynamic sounds that provide a warmth that work well with his exceptional vocal range. My favorite songs were “One Way or the Other” & “Halo (Blue Letter)”. “One Way or the Other” is a beautiful track that reminds of early 2010s indie-pop. The song is bright, and it has an uplifting spirit that will make you have hope for the future. At my current state in life, I resonated with this song the most. I’ve been in grief since the death of my girlfriend, and this song has given me hope to keep moving while also remembering the good times. “Halo (Blue Letter)” is cinematic song that was made for the climax of a young adult romance movie. Personally, this song was that moment of clarity for me on the EP, and it sets up “One Way or the Other” to steal the show.

Overall, this is one of my favorite EP’s this year. So, stream it below and vibe out!
