Have you ever listened to a band that caught your attention on the first listen? If so, what was it that made them stand out. Was it their production or song structure? Or was it their ability to create a sound that you felt relatable? For me, I’m always searching for daring bands that make music for the love of their craft. I yearn to escape my everyday life and immerse myself in the art of someone that I have no connection with. This week, I was impressed when I came across rising band Icarus Phoenix.

Hailing from Baltimore, MD, Icarus Phoenix is a band that is made up of Drew Danburry (gtr/vox), Eli Sims (drums), Leena Rhodes (gtr/vox/synth) and Brendan Russell (bass). They are raw, daring, captivating, and their songs will resonate with anyone that listens. Their innate ability to craft songs that evoke raw emotions out of their listeners is the reason they are being covered on our pages. In a time where music seems to be very formulaic, I love the rule breakers that are pushing boundaries. Icarus Phoenix aren’t afraid to bear it all, and they land on our pages with their latest album, “I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said”.

“I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said” is a reflective album that dives into themes of loss, separation, and starting over. Taking real life moments in an autobiographical way, Icarus Phoenix produce an album that is raw and heartfelt. This album is one big journal entry that describes the trials and tribulations that many go through. Drew Danbury pens real life moments that he has experienced, and that is what makes this album easy to connect with. It feels real & honest.

Although the 10-track album is exceptional, my favorite songs were “High Tide” & “Live.Give.Lose.Grow”. Those felt like some of the most honest tracks on the album. As someone who is currently dealing with loss in my family, this album was a beacon of hope for me. Listening to this made me feel less alone. With that being said, stream the album below.
