When it comes to music discovery, I am always search for artists that push the boundaries and bring you into their world. In a time where most modern music feels formulaic, I yearn for the artists that are making music that I consider healing. There is nothing like listening to a song or album that you connect with. For me, listening to music that gives me goosebumps is a high that I chase every time I play a new artist. Although the industry is saturated with artists and music emerging daily, I still find a way to come across hidden gems that are moving music forward. This week, I came across rising singer-songwriter Lancelot Chen.
Lancelot Chen is one of those special artists that makes music that is raw, daring, and captivating. His melodies are sincere, and his songwriting is exceptional. Personally, I feel like he is the full package. Although he has emerged this year, you can tell he’s found his sound. After hearing his album “Live a Dream” in July, I knew he had that “IT” factor. Now, he debuts on our pages with his captivating album, “Gist of the Dusk”.
“Gist of the Dusk” is 12-track pop masterclass that also incorporated other genres to create a distinguished yet cohesive sound. The album is carried by dynamic records that are laced with lush melodies, warm vocal tones, and otherworldly sonics. This may be one of the best concept albums I have heard. Personally, I connected with the fact that it tells the story of someone leaving past traumas behind to reach their dreams. As someone who has had a rough 2024, this album gives me hope for the future.
My favorite songs from the album were “Back in Time” & “Scary Hour”. “Back in Time” is a vibrant record carried by captivating percussive elements. The song starts relatively slow and ambient, seamlessly transitioning to the latter verses. It also resembles the drifts of thoughts from “Million Lightyears” to “Back in Time”. “Scary Hour” has a darker feel, and I consider it to be Gothic. The song has a long ambient intro with majestic synths. It is to build up the image of one wandering within a monotone city engulfed by perpetual darkness—the monotone and constant darkness results from the loss of purpose in life and self-doubt.
Overall, this is one of the best albums I have listened to this year, and it further proves Lancelot Chen’s star power. Although he isn’t a household name, Chen is pioneering the next generation of major artists. He can’t be put into a box, and I can’t wait to see him continue to grow. With that being said, stream the album below and vibe out!
