In today’s music industry, I feel like everything sounds the same. Everyone is either riding the same trends or they are creating songs with little substance. As an art form, music needs to be expressive, and there needs to be an identity behind the artists/bands that are making it. In a time where music feels formulaic and emotionless, I continue to search for artists/bands that are pioneering this next generation. Regardless of monthly listeners and hype, all I care about is the music. What story are you trying to tell? What sets you apart from the rest of the industry? Do I connect with this? These are all questions that I try to answer when finding new artists. This week, I came across Latvian-born visual and audio artist Cherry Makes Waves.

Now based in Amsterdam, Cherry Makes Waves has thoroughly impressed me with her unique and captivating sound. She is raw, daring, and she is pioneer for this next generation of artists. Sonically, her songs are laced with groovy base lines, ear-catching vocals, and a compelling message. Now, she enters our pages with her EP, “90 Beats Per Minute”.

“90 Beats Per Minute” is a 5-track genre-bending EP carried by dynamic sonics, rich sounds, and otherworldly vocals. Staying true to her eclectic nature, her project showcases her following her heart while breaking genres and boundaries. To add to the fact that she is breaking boundaries, the project was created as a global collaboration across Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, and the US. It is a testament to the fact that even with the same tempo, each song hits in its own way.

My favorite songs were “Spaceman” & “BIG LEAGUE”. “Spaceman” is a cinematic record that has a cosmic feel. The song is laced with electronic notes and lush melodies. I was a huge fan of the synths, and it added to the overall feel of the record. “BIG LEAGUE” is another must-listen song. It is carried by flashy drums, captivating guitars, and it has a punchy & direct feel that takes it home. Overall, this is one of my favorite projects this year so make sure to stream it below!
