Hailing from Belfast, emerging rock-band, Black Opal, has taken the music industry by storm. They are raw, captivating, and their dynamic sound evokes raw emotions out of their listeners. In my opinion, they are everything you want in a band. With a sound that fuses melodic and riff laden guitars with poignant lyricism, they craft music that has a groove that can be considered rhythmic or ‘headie’. Listening to them is like entering an eye of a storm. There is chaos all around but a calmness when you listen to the core of their music. For me, they are the heartbeat of the music industry and I have not been able to stop listening to them. Now, they debut on our pages with their latest album, “Divine Accusations”.

“Divine Accusations” is a transformative album that I consider to be the band’s magnum opus. Over the course of 12 exceptional songs, the band explores themes of love, loss, and aspects of the human condition. Sonically, the album pays homage to the decades before by drawing influence from rock & alternative elements from the 70s, 80s, & 90s. This allows the band to craft a nostalgic sound that brings together 90s grunge, indie-pop, and punk music all into one. The album as a whole is rhythmic, and I loved that the records were laced with lush melodies & otherworldly hooks.

My favorite songs were “Beautiful Confusion” & “Hit the Lights”. “Beautiful Confusion” is a warm record that is carried by engaging guitar riffs, comforting basslines, and captivating vocals. Lyrically, I connected with the chaos that surrounds the song’s theme, and I found the hook to be the most memorable. “Hit the Lights” was my personal favorite. This is an electric masterpiece. The cadence selection and overall vocal delivery was exceptional. This was the strongest song vocally and sonically. With that being said, Black Opal’s new album is worth the listen.
